  • Open Question: C++ question; importance/ use of or equals |= ?

    I was hoping someone could explain to me this operator. I haven't really used it before, but I've just come across it and want to understand it. If you have code like: int x =0; if(y>4) x |= 1 else x |= 2 Whats the point of it isn't it the same as using regular equals? Or is it more, the value has to either be set to 1 or 2, it can't not be set. Although, again being and if - else statement thats already guaranteed. I suppose its intended for more complex stuff, I came across it in code initialising directX stuff. Anywho, any enlightenment will be appreciated. =D

  • Open Question: Christian Pro-Life: Is jerking-off the same as abortion to you?

    Considering your Church believed men were the ones who planted a child and the female was merely the vessel up until, oh, the 19th century, does this imply that jerking-off is like killing babies? Now that we've made a few advancements in science, you can use your new-found 'understanding' of the fusion of gametes to pinpoint the exact creation of life. Oh how marvellous! Did God tell you that a fertilized egg is now fully human and alive? Who exactly was it that gave you this great enlightenment? It certainly wasn't the Bible (I recall it says a baby is only alive after it takes its first breath). Alright. Than you could call sperm and ova human life too, only split in half! Why not start right there? No, Benny, please re-read my damn question. @Cadisney: Lol, seriously? Stopping development is murder? It hasn't even developed into anything with a brain or a heart yet, it's not even alive, wtf are you saying? Take it out of the womb and it's dead. Murder is when you KILL something that was ALIVE to begin with.

  • Open Question: christians: how can the first day-sunday be also use as eight day-sunday? stop twisting my brains.............?

    do we not have only seven days in a week? where and how did you force eight day in the first day of the week..? isn't sunday the first day of the week? how is that that eight day is also sunday(to some christian organization they call it "the new beginning-resurrection of Jesus) it is so... not biblical, and there are a lot of un-biblical claims christians today add in to their church doctrines. how did you come up with your own interpretations..? or do you claim that it's the holy spirit enlightenment to the man/woman of God, about the first day sunday to be use as eight day sunday too?

  • Open Question: How do practicing Buddhists deal with this problem?

    Buddhism tells us that awareness is the key to overcoming suffering and the way to attain enlightenment. When we become aware (partially or fully) we begin to see the world for what it is. We begin to see people and their actions for what they are also. For lack of a better way to put it, we start to notice how there is an overwhelmingly hollow quality to most people's behaviors and words. My question is on how to handle interacting with people who are blind to parts of reality and continue on in some sort of delusion. After reaching a certain level of growth, we begin to feel compassion for those who seem lost and a strong desire to help them see the circular and delusional nature of their actions. However, as we all have experienced, you can't just go up to someone and successfully get them to see their fruitlessness. Most people will tell you that YOU are the one that is being self-righteous and pretentious, however sincere and genuine your words are. For example, I have a friend that (through the years) has told me that I need to be having sex with many girls and I will feel more fulfilled. I have another friend who thinks that I'm a square for not smoking marijuana. In my Physics laboratory, myself and a girl have to work with a third partner who is self-absorbed and treats us like we don't know how to do anything. How do you handle dealing with people who don't see the futility of there ways without developing a condescending demeanor or state of mind? How do you help people who just don't want to be helped? Especially if the person is someone you love and care about?
